About EducationWise

At EducationWise, Louise Ridout draws on her personal experiences to help struggling students improve their grades and increase their self-confidence.

Many years ago, especially when I was in public school, I was a slow learner. I was not ‘dumb’ – I just did not understand why we were learning what we were learning. It didn’t seem to have much relevance to my life, so I tuned out and daydreamed my way through classes and school.

I remember the frustration of trying to answer questions my teacher asked me when I didn’t understand the question. I remember the embarrassment of not getting the right answer. I remember how I wanted to understand better, but I was too afraid to ask!

Since I was not learning from my teachers, I decided that I had to take my learning into my own hands. I sat down with my textbook and started reading from the beginning of the book – one sentence at a time. I would not move ahead until I understood each sentence, one sentence or paragraph at a time. If I couldn’t figure it out myself, I went to my teacher and asked for help – asking only small questions about one sentence or paragraph in the book.

I went on to complete an Honours degree in Mathematics, a Master’s degree in Statistics and eventually to become a Math and Stats instructor at Mount Royal College in Calgary. I have had extensive experience tutoring students of all grades and ages. Currently, as well as coaching and training the highly qualified tutors of EducationWise Inc., I still tutor some students myself.

Today, I’m helping early, high school, post-secondary and mature students, to overcome the same challenges and frustrations I felt as a young girl, showing them how to learn according to their personal style and interests and encouraging them to take responsibility for their own learning.

I pay attention to our students. I try to explain things to them using language that they can understand, and by breaking bigger problems down into smaller steps that they can easily follow. I love to see their joy and delight as they have success and get to know their own abilities and strengths in doing these things.

This approach is part of my personal commitment to help my students realize their goals and experience academic achievement.

I handpick EducationWise tutors and I personally train them to provide exceptional tutoring guided by these principles:

  • An ability to aid students in recognizing their own individual strengths, abilities and interests and know their own value so that they may take responsibility for their own learning and experience the rewards and success that come from education
  • A genuine interest in seeing students improve, succeed and enjoy learning
  • An understanding that some students learn better with one-on-one tutoring than in a traditional learning setting
  • Patience and flexibility
